Asaphus Trilobite

Travel back more than 450 million years with this impressive Asaphus trilobite fossil, preserved on its natural matrix. Measuring approximately 3 inches long on a 5 x 4 inch matrix, this specimen displays the broad, streamlined body form characteristic of this well-known group of Ordovician trilobites.

Asaphus was a genus of marine arthropod that lived during the Ordovician Period, with representatives known from roughly 470 million years ago. These trilobites inhabited ancient seas long before dinosaurs appeared on Earth. Fossil occurrences of Asaphus are particularly well known from northern and eastern Europe.

Asaphid trilobites are recognized by their broad exoskeletons, relatively large head and tail shields, and eight-segmented thorax. The genus Asaphus typically has a long central glabella extending toward the front of the head and a prominent pygidial axis. Some species within the genus developed extraordinary elevated eyes, making Asaphus particularly interesting for studying adaptations in trilobite vision.

This specimen exhibits a warm brown exoskeleton contrasting against the light-colored matrix, with well-defined thoracic segmentation and a broad pygidium. The raised eye structures are also readily visible.
