Travel back approximately 470 million years with this remarkable Ceraurus sp. trilobite fossil from the Middle Ordovician Period. Discovered near New Glarus, Wisconsin, in the Galena Formation, this specimen offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient marine environments that once covered much of North America.

Ceraurus is a genus of trilobite known for its distinctive spiny appearance, segmented exoskeleton, and prominent head shield. Unlike many trilobites with more rounded body shapes, Ceraurus possessed elongated spines that extended from its exoskeleton, likely providing protection against predators. These prehistoric marine arthropods inhabited ancient seafloors millions of years before dinosaurs appeared. Trilobites were among the most successful groups of early marine animals, surviving for nearly 270 million years before becoming extinct approximately 252 million years ago.

This impressive specimen measures approximately 2 inches and features a trilobite preserved on a natural limestone matrix. Its body displays well-defined thoracic segments, a distinctive head shield, and prominent spines extending outward from the exoskeleton. The warm brown coloration of the fossil contrasts beautifully with the cream, tan, and gray tones of the surrounding matrix. Natural textures and small fossil fragments scattered throughout the limestone add character to this attractive display piece, making it an excellent addition to any trilobite collection.
