The American Civil War (1861–1865)
The Civil War was a defining moment in U.S. history, fought between the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South) over states' rights and slavery. It began in April 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter, and lasted until the South’s surrender in April 1865.
Union Army (North)
The Union Army represented the United States of America under President Abraham Lincoln. Comprising 20 free states and 5 border states, its mission was to defeat the Confederacy and preserve the nation.
Confederate Army (South)
The Confederate States of America was formed by 11 seceding states, led by Jefferson Davis. Though the Confederacy fought for independence, it was never officially recognized as a sovereign nation.
