Cornuproetus cornutus Trilobite

Travel back approximately 390 million years to the Middle Devonian Period with this fascinating Cornuproetus cornutus trilobite fossil from Morocco. This distinctive specimen showcases the remarkable anatomy of an ancient marine arthropod, preserved in a tightly enrolled position.

Measuring approximately 1 inch, this trilobite features a dark charcoal-black exoskeleton with pronounced segmentation, a raised central axis, and a rounded, three-dimensional form. Its deeply defined body segments and curved outer edges highlight the intricate structure of its protective exoskeleton. The fossil rests within a contrasting matrix measuring approximately 1.5 x 1.25 inches, creating an attractive natural display.

Cornuproetus cornutus was a marine trilobite belonging to the order Proetida, a diverse group of ancient arthropods that inhabited prehistoric oceans. This species is recognized for its distinctive head structure and backward-sweeping genal spines. Like many trilobites, it possessed a flexible, segmented exoskeleton that allowed it to enroll its body, potentially protecting its softer underside from potential threats.

The enrolled posture of this specimen offers a fascinating view of this anatomical adaptation, with the trilobite's segmented body forming a compact, rounded shape. Its dark coloration stands out beautifully against the pale surrounding stone, making it an appealing addition to any fossil collection or natural history display.
