Often mistaken for a dinosaur, Dimetrodon was actually a synapsid—a group of animals that includes mammals and their ancient relatives. Living during the Early Permian Period, over 40 million years before the first dinosaurs, Dimetrodon had more in common with us than with modern reptiles.

Its most striking feature was the tall, spiny sail along its back. While paleontologists aren’t certain of its purpose, theories suggest it may have been used for regulating body temperature or for display. Dimetrodon also had a distinctive walk, with its legs splayed to the side rather than positioned beneath its body like dinosaurs.

Dimetrodon thrived during the Early Permian, long before dinosaurs evolved. Its name, meaning “Two sizes of teeth,” reflects the sharp differentiation in its teeth—an adaptation that made it an effective carnivore. Despite its reptilian appearance, Dimetrodon was more closely related to mammals than to dinosaurs or living reptiles.

Scientific Name: Dimetrodon (“Two sizes of teeth”)

This hand-painted Dimetrodon figure features its signature sprawling stance, rounded skull, differentiated teeth, and of course, its towering sail. Meticulously crafted, the figure reflects the most recognizable traits of this prehistoric predator.

Our Dimetrodon toy is 7 inches long and 4 ¼ inches high at the tip of its sail.
