Fossil Fish Plate (Coccodus)

Travel back approximately 98 million years with this fascinating Coccodus fossil fish from the Cretaceous Period of Lebanon. This unusual prehistoric fish measures approximately 4.75 inches long and is preserved on a natural limestone matrix measuring approximately 5.75 x 3 inches.

The fossil displays remarkable anatomical features, including its broad head, prominent curved spines, visible vertebral column, and delicate tail fin. Particularly striking are the large, curved spines extending from the upper and lower portions of its body near the head. These impressive structures likely served as a defense against predators. Its warm reddish-brown coloration contrasts beautifully against the light beige limestone, creating an eye-catching display piece.

Coccodus was an unusual prehistoric bony fish equipped with rounded, bump-like teeth specially adapted for crushing the hard shells of mollusks and crustaceans. Unlike many predatory fish that relied on sharp teeth to capture prey, Coccodus was adapted to feed on hard-shelled marine organisms inhabiting the ancient Tethys Ocean.

Fossils of Coccodus are found in Lebanon's renowned Cretaceous limestone deposits, which are celebrated worldwide for their exceptional preservation of prehistoric marine life. These ancient seabeds have yielded remarkable fossils of fish, crustaceans, and other marine organisms, offering a fascinating glimpse into ecosystems that existed alongside the dinosaurs.

With its distinctive body shape, unusual crushing teeth, and dramatic protective spines, this Coccodus specimen makes an excellent addition to any fossil collection, educational display, or natural history exhibit.
