Although Megacerops looked very much like today’s rhinoceroses, it wasn’t closely related. Instead, it belonged to the Brontotheres, also known as “Thunder Beasts”—a family of giant prehistoric mammals. These massive herbivores were the largest land mammals of the Eocene epoch, roaming North America about 35 million years ago.

The story of Megacerops is one of the most tangled in paleontology. Rival scientists raced to name specimens that ultimately belonged to the same species, and confusion only deepened with the work of Henry Fairfield Osborn, who misinterpreted much of the Brontothere family’s traits. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that paleontologist Matthew Mihlbachler redefined the family tree of Brontotheriidae, clarifying the true identity of Megacerops.

Scientific Name: Megacerops (“Large Horned Face”)

This hand-painted Megacerops toy features the animal’s signature forked nose-horn raised proudly, perhaps in a display of strength or to impress potential mates. Sculpted with accuracy and detail, the figure highlights its thick, pebbly hide and robust body, bringing this prehistoric giant to life.

The Megacerops figure measures 3 ¾ inches tall (to the horn tip) and 6 ½ inches long (to the tail).
