This authentic native copper specimen comes from Michigan, a region world renowned for producing some of the finest native copper ever discovered. Native copper is the uncombined, elemental form of copper and one of the few metallic elements that naturally occurs in a pure state rather than bonded within other minerals. Most copper is mined from oxidized ores, making naturally occurring native copper comparatively rare.

Michigan native copper typically displays the warm orange brown color associated with copper metal and may appear free of matrix or partially embedded in calcite or host rock. Rather than forming sharp crystals, native copper most often develops as irregular masses, compressed plates, or branching and dendritic structures with organic shapes. True copper crystals are rare, but when present they may form cubic or modified dodecahedral shapes.

Historically, native copper from Michigan was an important resource for Indigenous cultures and later played a major role in the development of the copper industry in North America. Today, these specimens are highly valued for their geological significance, historic importance, and striking natural appearance. They make excellent display pieces for mineral collections, classrooms, and natural history exhibits.

Multiple individual specimens are available. Use the menu to select the exact piece you would like to receive. Each specimen is naturally unique in form, surface texture, and matrix association.
