Redlichia chinensis Trilobite

Travel back more than 500 million years with this fascinating Redlichia chinensis trilobite fossil from the Early Cambrian Period, approximately 515–507 million years ago. Collected from the Balang Formation in Hunan Province, China, this impressive specimen represents one of the earliest groups of trilobites to inhabit Earth's ancient oceans.

Measuring approximately 2.5 inches, this trilobite features a broad, rounded head shield, an elongated segmented body, and a prominently raised central axis. Its numerous slender thoracic segments extend outward in a distinctive, slightly curved pattern, creating an intricate, almost featherlike appearance. The fossil is preserved in subtle three-dimensional relief against a dark gray matrix, with fine details visible throughout its exoskeleton.

Redlichia chinensis belonged to the order Redlichiida, an early group of trilobites that flourished during the Cambrian Period. These ancient marine arthropods inhabited the seafloor during a remarkable chapter in Earth's history known as the Cambrian Explosion, when many major groups of animals first appeared in the fossil record. Their segmented exoskeletons provide valuable insight into the early evolution of arthropods and the development of complex marine ecosystems.

With its elongated body, intricate segmentation, and distinctive Cambrian anatomy, this Redlichia chinensis trilobite makes a fascinating addition to any fossil collection.
