The Rosetta Stone was named for the town in the Nile delta where it was discovered in 1799. Almost 4 feet tall, the granite is inscribed with Greek, Demotic, and Hieroglyphics, which enabled Jean-Francois Champollion to decipher the hieroglyphic language.
