About Triceratops
Triceratops was one of the most recognizable dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous Period. Its name means “three-horned face,” referring to the pair of large brow horns above its eyes and the smaller horn positioned above its beak.
A large herbivorous ceratopsian, Triceratops could reach approximately 30 feet in length and possessed a massive skull equipped with a broad bony frill. The frill was composed of several bones, including the squamosals that formed substantial portions of its lateral margins.
The exact functions of the Triceratops frill continue to be studied, with proposed roles including display, species recognition, and protection. The bone itself was living tissue during the animal's lifetime and was supplied by blood vessels, traces of which can be preserved as vascular grooves on fossilized frill material.
