What Is Fossilized Dinosaur Bone?

Dinosaur bone becomes fossilized through a process called permineralization. After burial in sediment, groundwater rich in dissolved minerals flows through the porous bone structure. Over time, minerals such as silica replace the original organic material while preserving the microscopic bone structure. The result is a stone replica of the original bone. These specimens come from fossil deposits in Madagascar, an island nation off the southeastern coast of Africa known for producing beautifully preserved fossil material.

Because we have not been able to determine the exact dinosaur species or specific bone type, we affectionately call these pieces Chunkasaurus. They are authentic dinosaur bone fragments, but their precise origin within the skeleton remains unknown.
