Dicranurus monstrosus Trilobite
This impressive Dicranurus monstrosus trilobite comes from the Laatchana Formation of Morocco and dates to the Middle Devonian Period, approximately 390 million years ago.
Dicranurus monstrosus is one of the most visually striking trilobites, instantly recognizable for its extraordinary array of spines. This specimen displays the species’ dramatic morphology beautifully, with prominent curled spines extending above the head, long sweeping lateral spines, and an extensively spined body. The fossil has excellent three-dimensional relief against the lighter-colored matrix, creating a particularly impressive display from multiple angles.
These elaborate structures made Dicranurus remarkably different from many other trilobites and may have provided protection from predators in the ancient marine environment it inhabited.
The trilobite measures approximately 3 inches long and is presented on an approximately 4 x 4 inch matrix. With its intricate preparation, dramatic profile, and highly distinctive appearance, this is an exceptional display fossil for a trilobite or natural history collection.
