Mount St. Helens Volcanic Ash

Experience a piece of history with this unique sample of volcanic ash, ejected during the most catastrophic volcanic event in US history.

Product Details:

  • Eruption Event: This ash was violently expelled from Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980, during a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that triggered the largest landslide ever recorded by the USGS and a massive lateral explosion.
  • Volcanic Explosivity: The eruption, rated a 5 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, was one of the largest in the 20th century. Its explosive power was heard up to 700 miles away.
  • Impact: The eruption caused widespread devastation with debris, avalanches, mudflows, and hot gas scouring forests. Ash plumes reached 12 miles high, with ash-fall reported up to 1,500 miles away.
  • Ash Characteristics: Each volcanic ash sample is unique, determined by the chemistry, crystal content, temperature, and dissolved gases of the magma. Highly explosive eruptions like this one produce lighter colored ash due to higher silica content.
  • Display: Comes in an acrylic display case that is 1.6" wide.

Own a tangible piece of geological history with this Mount St. Helens Volcanic Ash, a perfect addition for collectors, educators, and history enthusiasts.
