Fun Facts About Pyrite

Pyrite is a mineral comprised primarily of iron sulfide. It is often confused with gold, which is why it is also known as fool’s gold. Here are some fun facts about pyrite:

  • In Ancient Greek, pyrite means fire because it creates sparks when you strike it against a similarly strong stone.
  • It is the most common iron sulfide on the planet today.
  • Gold and pyrite often form together, making it even more difficult to tell them apart.
  • One way to tell the difference between gold and pyrite is to pinch it. If little pieces break off the edges, it is most likely pyrite.
  • Pyrite cubes are naturally occurring and can be found in a quarry in Spain.
  • Pyrite suns can be found in Sparta, Illinois.
  • Some people believe pyrite brings wealth and good fortune.

Pyrite comes in many different varieties from little nuggets to large show pieces. Tyrannostorus is proud to offer a wide selection including pyrite cubes and pyrite suns. You can check them out here!
