Fossil Eagle Ray Mouth Plates have arrived at Tyrannostorus! These fascinating fossils showcase the unique feeding adaptations of ancient eagle rays, a group of cartilaginous fishes belonging to the family Myliobatidae. Unlike many rays that dwell along the sea floor, eagle rays are known for spending much of their time cruising the open ocean.
Eagle rays specialized in feeding on hard shelled prey such as mollusks and crustaceans. Instead of sharp teeth, they possessed broad, flattened crushing plates known as pavement teeth. These powerful tooth plates were arranged in rows within the upper and lower jaws, allowing the ray to easily crack open clam shells, crabs, and other armored prey.
Each fossil mouth plate offers a remarkable glimpse into the feeding mechanics of these ancient marine animals and makes an excellent addition to any fossil collection, classroom display, or cabinet of curiosities.
