Anthill Casting
Anthill Casting
Ants are one of the world’s strongest creatures relative to size. One ant can carry 50 times its bodyweight, and a group of ants often work together to move larger objects back to their nest. They are social insects that live in colonies. The largest ant nest on record was 3,700 miles wide! An anthill is an above ground nest. These usually range in size from 1 inch to 10 feet tall.
Recently, a new art form has emerged that involves pouring molten aluminum into abandoned anthills. This creates a casting like the one pictured, which can be put on display or used for research and educational purposes because aluminum anthill castings reveal information about the structure and social interaction of ants with the largest chambers being reserved for the queen of the colony.
This listing is for the aluminum anthill casting pictured, which is approximately 4 x 3 x 1.5” and weighs almost 11 ounces.
