This fossil plate is approximately 4.5” x 3” and three-quarters of an inch thick. It features a genuine Lebanese fish fossil. Lebanon is known for its well-preserved marine specimens. There are many species from deposits in Hjoûla and Hâqel, Lebanon, which can make identification difficult. The most common fish from the area are small-sized Teleosteans belonging to Salmoniformes, Mictophiformes, and Clupeomorpha. The fish fossil on this limestone plate is about 3” long and resembles Armigatus, an extinct genus of Clupeomoroph fish that lived during the Cretaceous Period. It was a small ray-finned fish toward the bottom of the food chain. This fish comes from fossil deposits first mentioned by Greek historian Herodotus who said there were fish in the stones. You will receive the item pictured in this listing (minus any additional decor).
