These fossil sawfish barbs were discovered in Morocco and come from an extinct giant sawskate called Onchopristis (a.k.a. ‘giant saw’). Onchopristis lived during the Upper Cretaceous and was characterized by its long sawlike snout, which is also known as a rostrum. Its rostrum was lined with hooked and barbed tooth-like structures. Onchopristis used its rostrum to dig and unearth crustaceans. It was also used to defend itself against predators like the Spinosaurus.
