This German Petrified Wood specimen is an exceptional example of permineralized fossil wood with remarkable surface detail and preservation. Collected from a historic coal mine deposit in the city of Zwenkau in eastern Germany, this material dates to the Upper Eocene, approximately 35 million years ago.

Permineralization is an early stage of the petrification process in which mineral rich water infiltrates the wood, preserving its structure while some original organic material remains. Because this specimen has not fully petrified, sections of the wood retain a lifelike appearance, with grain and texture so well preserved that it can resemble freshly cut firewood. In some rare cases, portions of this material may still be soft and even combustible, offering a fascinating snapshot of fossilization in progress.

Adding to its visual appeal, much of the exterior is naturally encrusted with sparkling druzy quartz crystals. These fine quartz formations create a subtle shimmer across the surface and highlight the contrast between fossilized wood and mineral growth. Pictures don't do these pieces justice. Watch the videos to see how druzy they are!

The Zwenkau mine where this material originated is now flooded, and no new specimens have been recovered in many years. As a result, examples of this permineralized wood have become increasingly difficult to obtain, making each piece a unique and finite collectible.

Each specimen is natural and will vary in shape, texture, crystal coverage, and coloration. Use the menu to select from available pieces.
