Golden Silk Orb-Weavers are also known as Golden Orb-Weavers, Banana Spiders, and Giant Wood Spiders. They can be found worldwide and are known for the large webs they weave, which are circular and can be up to 5 feet across! The genus name, Nephila, derived from Ancient Greek and means "fond of spinning." They make seven different types of silk, and their silk is stronger than other spiders. Unlike other orb-weavers, the Golden Silk Orb-Weaver repairs damage to its web rather than creating a new one each day. In 2011, two of these spiders were brought to the International Space Station so astronauts could observe their web-building. In addition to entertaining us with their impressive webs, Golden Silk Orb-Weavers help us by consuming pests. This bug box contains a fascinating specimen. Our bug boxes are larger than most. The frames are 9" x 9" and feature beautifully preserved specimens mounted on a linen background in a wooden frame behind clear glass. All specimens have been ethically sourced. You will receive the bug box pictured in this listing. The photos reflect natural variances in lighting. Approximate measurements and additional details are listed above.
