Graptolite Fossil: Araneograptus murrayi
Step back in time with this incredible Graptolite Fossil, Araneograptus murrayi, from approximately 480 million years ago.
Product Details:
- Species: This fossil is a specimen of Araneograptus murrayi, a Graptolite species from the Tremadocian stage of the lower Ordovician period.
- Origin: Preserved in the renowned Fezouata shale deposits of Morocco, this fossil offers a glimpse into ancient marine life.
- Organism Description: Graptolites were colonial, planktonic organisms with dendritic morphology, featuring numerous appendages that fanned out to gather food as they floated through the ocean. This specimen, though incomplete, showcases part of this unique fan-like structure.
- Geological Context: The fossil is preserved in shale layers that span 1,100 meters (3,600 ft), containing thousands of specimens from 50 distinct taxa. This provides a detailed fossil record from 470 to 485 million years ago. A 2016 study suggests that sediment deposition by ancient storms helped preserve these organisms, creating a Pompeii-like snapshot of life on the ancient sea floor.
- Display: Includes one graptolite specimen in a 2 x 1.5 x 0.75" acrylic case.
- Variation: Photos are representative of typical specimens. Some natural variation in size and shape should be expected.
