Kaprosuchus proves that ancient crocodile relatives were far more diverse than the crocodiles we know today. Living in northern Africa about 95 million years ago, this fearsome predator sported tusk-like fangs that earned it the nickname “boar croc.” With its long jaws and powerful bite, it was a formidable carnivore of the Late Cretaceous.

Kaprosuchus saharicus is known from a remarkably complete skull, discovered in the Sahara and described in 2009. The name means “boar crocodile,” referring to its three pairs of enlarged fangs—one pair of which jutted upward like boar tusks. Though only the skull has been found, paleontologists believe its body resembled other crocodylomorphs, with four short legs and a strong tail.

Scientific Name: Kaprosuchus saharicus

This Safari Ltd. model depicts Kaprosuchus with broad, toothed jaws, protruding tusk-like fangs, and a powerful, crocodile-like body. Its sharp teeth and muscular jaws suggest it was an effective meat-eater in its time.

The Kaprosuchus toy measures 8.25 inches long and 2 inches high.
