Liopleurodon was a powerful marine reptile that ruled the shallow seas of Europe during the Middle Jurassic, about 160–155 million years ago. Unlike its long-necked plesiosaur relatives such as Elasmosaurus, Liopleurodon had a massive head and short neck, built for ambush hunting and crushing prey. At more than 20 feet in length, it was among the largest predators of its time.

History: The first remains of Liopleurodon were discovered in France in 1873 by paleontologist Henri Sauvage. Although he found only teeth, they were unmistakable—unlike most reptile teeth of the time, Liopleurodon’s were completely smooth, lacking ridges or serrations. This distinctive feature inspired its name: Liopleurodon, meaning “smooth-sided tooth.”

Scientific Name: Liopleurodon

Belonging to a group of plesiosaurs called pliosaurs, Liopleurodon was armed with a gigantic skull filled with conical teeth perfect for gripping slippery prey. Its streamlined body and powerful flippers made it a swift, agile hunter in Jurassic seas. The Safari Ltd Liopleurodon toy highlights its broad jaws and pliosaur design, offering a lifelike glimpse of this ocean predator.

This Liopleurodon toy model measures 7 inches long and 4 inches wide.
