About the Artwork
This authentic 19th century engraving measures approximately 9.75 x 7.75 inches and displays Hahn’s precise linework and delicate hand coloring. The species illustrated, historically called Mygale avicularia, is now correctly known as Avicularia avicularia, commonly referred to as the pinktoe tarantula. Hahn’s depiction preserves the early scientific interpretation of this visually striking species, providing an important record of early arachnological study.
Avicularia avicularia is a New World arboreal tarantula known for its vivid coloration and distinctive pink-tipped feet, which give the species its common name. Native to northern South America, it lives in tree holes and constructs silken retreats, often suspended above the forest floor. These spiders are renowned for their climbing abilities, delicate appearance, and generally mild temperament, making them popular among arachnid enthusiasts. Females are larger than males and display a range of greenish-brown to black body coloration with bright pink or orange tarsi, while males are typically smaller and slimmer.
Hahn’s illustration captures both the elegance and natural history significance of this species, reflecting the careful observation and artistry that defined his work. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into early 19th century European knowledge of exotic spiders.
The piece is beautifully presented in an ornate gold frame measuring approximately 21.25 x 17.25 inches, complete with a secure hanging apparatus. A certificate of authenticity is included.
