Discover an exceptional original hand tinted engraving from 1820 by renowned German zoologist and natural history illustrator Carl Wilhelm Hahn. This remarkable work features Mygale calpeiana, created for Hahn’s monumental publication Monographia Aranearum = Monographie der Spinnen, the first German monograph devoted entirely to spiders.
About the Artwork
This authentic 19th century engraving measures approximately 9.75 x 7.75 inches and displays the refined hand coloring and precise linework that define Hahn’s natural history artworks. The name Mygale calpeiana, used by Hahn, is now obsolete. The species is currently recognized as Macrothele calpeiana, commonly known as the Gibraltar funnel web spider or Spanish funnel web spider. This updated classification highlights the evolution of arachnological understanding since the early 1800s, making the engraving an important record of historical taxonomy.
Macrothele calpeiana is one of the most distinctive mygalomorph spiders in Europe. It is known for its large size, dark glossy coloration, and impressive funnel like silk retreat. Unlike true web builders, these spiders create long silk lined burrows that extend into soil or rock crevices, often with a broad sheet of silk spread at the entrance to detect passing prey. A powerful ambush predator, it rushes outward from its hidden tunnel to seize insects that disturb the silk surface.
This species is native to the Iberian Peninsula and is especially associated with the region around Gibraltar. It prefers woodland, scrub, and rocky terrain with sufficient cover for its burrows. Though imposing in appearance, it poses limited risk to humans. Its venom can produce discomfort but is not considered medically dangerous.
Hahn’s illustration captures this striking spider during a period of intense scientific discovery, preserving the early visual and taxonomic history of one of Europe’s most notable mygalomorph species.
This engraving is beautifully presented in an ornate gold frame measuring approximately 21.25 x 17.25 inches, complete with a secure hanging apparatus. A certificate of authenticity is included.
About Carl Wilhelm Hahn
Carl Wilhelm Hahn, a German zoologist and natural history illustrator, made enduring contributions to early 19th century natural science. Born in Nuremberg, Hahn devoted his life to studying and documenting European wildlife, combining meticulous observation with a distinctive artistic style.
He is especially celebrated for his pioneering work in arachnology and entomology. Monographie der Spinnen introduced numerous species descriptions still recognized today and established a foundation for future spider research in Germany. Beyond arachnids, Hahn also produced elegant bird illustrations known for their accuracy, character, and attention to detail.
Hahn’s work remains treasured for its rare blend of science and artistry. Each piece reflects the curiosity and dedication of a naturalist working at a formative moment in zoological history, and his illustrations continue to shape the modern appreciation of natural history art.
