Discover an extraordinary original hand tinted engraving from 1820, created by renowned German zoologist and natural history illustrator Carl Wilhelm Hahn. This exceptional piece, titled Mygale fasciata, comes from Hahn’s groundbreaking work Monographia Aranearum = Monographie der Spinnen, the first German monograph devoted entirely to spiders.
About the Artwork
This authentic 19th century engraving measures approximately 9.75 x 7.75 inches and features delicate hand coloring that highlights Hahn’s scientific precision and artistic sensitivity. The spider depicted, historically known as Mygale fasciata, is the early scientific name for what is now classified as Poecilotheria fasciata, the Sri Lankan ornamental tarantula. First named in 1804 by Pierre Andre Latreille, the species was later reassigned to the genus Poecilotheria in 1885. This striking arboreal tarantula is native to Sri Lanka and is known for its vivid coloration, rapid movement, and potent venom, traits that made it a subject of great interest to early naturalists.
Hahn illustrated this species during a pivotal period in natural history, when the study of spiders was gaining scientific structure. His work in Monographie der Spinnen introduced species descriptions still recognized today and demonstrated his commitment to merging careful observation with artistic clarity. This engraving reflects that union, offering both historical significance and exceptional visual appeal.
The piece is elegantly presented in an ornate gold frame measuring approximately 21.25 x 17.25 inches, complete with a secure hanging apparatus. A certificate of authenticity is included.
