Step back over 200 million years to the dawn of the dinosaurs with Postosuchus. This powerful predator lived in what is now North America about 210 million years ago, during the Triassic period. Though it lived alongside some of the earliest dinosaurs, Postosuchus itself was not a dinosaur—it was a rauisuchid, a group of reptiles that dominated their ecosystems as top carnivores.

Postosuchus was the largest predator of its time, walking with an unusual upright stance. With strong legs that could support it on two feet or four, a deep snout filled with sharp, serrated teeth, and rows of protective bony scutes along its back and tail, it was a fearsome hunter. Adults could grow up to 13 feet long.

In 1980, a Texas Tech University expedition uncovered the first remains of Postosuchus in Garza County, West Texas. Over the next few years, multiple skeletons were found in the same area, providing paleontologists with an extraordinary look at this Triassic predator. By 1985, Postosuchus kirkpatricki was formally described, shedding light on one of prehistory’s most fascinating non-dinosaurian carnivores.

Scientific Name: Postosuchus kirkpatricki

This highly detailed Postosuchus figure captures the creature’s upright stance, long tail, bony back scutes, and fearsome jaws. Sculpted with care, the toy highlights its unique mix of reptilian traits and dinosaur-like posture.

This Postosuchus toy measures 7.5 inches long and 2.5 inches high.
